by Timothy C. Ely, Terence McKenna"The restrained imagery and impressive typography allow space and guidance for the wandering eye. It is in this space between text and image that the magic of Synesthesia is found. Text and image merge, giving way to an experience that transcends the page... It is a rare and frightening experience, which has the potential of transforming the consciousness of the reader." - Barbara Tetenbaum, Bookways.
In July of 1991, West Coast philosopher, ethno-botanist, and psychedelic theoretician Terence McKenna visited Granary's exhibition of books and prints by Timothy C. Ely. His reading of Ely's work, remarkable for its empathy and eloquence, inspired the present collaboration. McKenna's text, typographically interpreted and printed letterpress on Rives BFK by Phillip Gallo, appears on, around, and between Ely's original painted and drawn images, which Ely describes as "articulated glossolalia refracted from the writing."
