The Traveler and the Hill and the Hill
by Lyn Hejinian, Emilie Clark

The Traveler and the Hill and the Hill is a collaboration between poet Lyn Hejinian and artist Emilie Clark. In the first half of the book, Clark's richly layered monoprints respond to Hejinian's aphoristic poems; in the second half, Hejinian comments on Clark. The book presents a series of fairy tales gone awry—gone from the secure world of familiar knowledge and avuncular authority imparted to children into a hilarious, dark and dramatic space in which thinking happens in the seams between the sentences. While Hejinian's poems investigate the social logic that binds short, illustrative moral narratives, Clark's monoprints, unique in each copy, invent a space for this investigation in which rich colors, widely various drawing, printing, and transfer images behave almost as characters.

The book comprises thirty-one images and thirty-one texts plus front and back matter. Text designed by Hejinian and Clark, printed letterpress on Rives BFK by Philip Gallo at The Hermetic Press. Bound in cloth over boards and housed in a cloth-covered slipcase by Judith Ivry. Cover fabric printed by Ruth Lingen. Signed by Hejinian and Clark. 16 hors commerce, 45 for sale.
