The Invention of the Letter.

Carp and Whitefish Press, 1967. Item #2021

Spiral-bound with wire and printed boards. Subtitled, "A Beastly Morality Being an illuminated moral history, for the edification of younger readers." The colophon reads: "Hand-written and illustrated by the Author, and Dedicated to Irving Rosenthal, to be printed by the Messrs. Carp & Whitefish at their Press in New York City, New York, U.S.A." Publisher Irving Rosenthal decided to distribute the entire edition of the book free of charge to those attending a reading at San Francisco's Glide Church on June 14, 1968. Besides Philip Whalen, others presenting that evening included Richard Brautigan (who suggested giving the edition away for free), Joanne Kyger, Michael McClure, and Lenore Kandel. Very good with overall light shelf wear and evidence of fading and toning.
