A Curriculum of the Soul.

Institute of Further Studies, 1972–2002. Item #2137

Saddle-stitched in wrappers. The "fascicles," or chapbooks, drew on terms from Charles Olson's "A Plan for the Curriculum of the Soul," a document published in 1968 that was Projective Verse's answer to bibliography: a map of 223 terms, names, subjects, and ideas arrayed across a page.

In 1970, after Olson's death, Jack Clarke arranged pairings of 28 poets and terms from the "Curriculum." Joanne Kyger was a participant in the series along with Gerrit Lansing, Alice Notley, Harvey Brown, John Wieners, Robin Blaser, Ed Sanders, Michael McClure, Anselm Hollo, and many others, who explored Olson's topics at length and with their own poetic investments. Kyger remarks on the importance of "A Curriculum" to her and others in the post "The Community of The Curriculum of the Soul," on the Poetry Foundation site.

These copies are from the library of Joanne Kyger and include her notes in the form of post-its with holograph annotations, as well as light annotations and laid-in notes throughout. Condition ranges from very good plus to near fine, and show evidence of Kyger's reading practice. Individual photos and condition reports available upon request. Includes:
