San Francisco: [1962]. Item #2171

The Spicer Circle magazine appeared in 1962 in the period after and before Open Space. Edited by poets Lew Ellingham and Stan Persky, the magazine occurred in two issues during 1962.

During this span, M published Helen Adam, John Allen Ryan, George Stanley, Heinrich von Kleist (trans. Jim Herndon), Robin Blaser, William McNeill, Jack Moore, Gail Chugg, Bob Conner, Jack Flynn, Ebbe Borregaard, Jim Alexander, Tony Sherrod, Larry Fagin, Parker Hodges, Dale Landers, David Melville, the editors, and others. Later, Ellingham spent years researching a biography of Spicer, which was eventually co-authored with poet Kevin Killian as Poet Be Like God (Wesleyan, 1998).

Issues of the magazine contained extensive poetry; no. 1 is 59 leaves, no. 2 is 50 leaves; no. 1 is bound second, and no. 2 appears first.

In no. 1, "G. Stanley" and "Stan Pensky" are written in holograph on these respective authors' poems. A blue sticky note demarcates  the back of Jack Moore poem and the beginning of a "Wm McNeill" poem. On the back of no. 2, Kyger has written "Toson Shimazakei" and "Taisho - Showa," noting a Japanese author and era of history. Light foxing primarily at edges and more signficantly towards back of copy.

In no. 2, a colophon notes that the cover and illustration for poem "Melody of Triumvirates" are by Paul Alexander, and that the cost is fifty cents. It advertises Lewis Ellingham's editorship, noting "manuscripts may be sent to 454 Union St., San Francisco 11," and that "this is the second issue, published on summer holiday."
Cover is crumpled, and pages within are at times age-darkened (on colored papers), with toning and foxing at extremities.

The binder (cardstock) itself shows edge wear, toning, foxing, and slight rust stains. Inscribed with a large red marker "M," the folder houses both issues which have been pierced through neatly, twice, for the binding. The binder is from a Japanese stationer.
