St. Swithin's Swivet.

Portfolio of cloth over boards with printed label and cloth ties, 23 1/2 (w) x 30 (h) in. containing nine prints incorporating offset litho and letterpress with graphite on Arches paper. Print sizes vary and are approx. 22 (w) x 27 3/4 (h) in. There are two dates on the portfolio and title page, 1978 and 1997. Bernard Moxam uses 1997; according to the artist's online chronology, 1998 marked the "beginning of the project, St. Swithin’s Swivet, with drawings/prints made in collaboration with Jonathan Williams. The folder produced displays views through the windows of the home of Jonathan Williams at Corn Close (Dent, Yorkshire)." St. Swithin’s Day, July 15, a day on which, according to folklore, the weather for a subsequent period is dictated. In popular belief, if it rains on St. Swithin’s Day, it will rain for 40 days, but if it is fair, 40 days of fair weather will follow. St. Swithin was bishop of Winchester from 852 to 862. Furnival depicts views from JW's window accompanied by his swivet in the form of droll poetic utterances. The prints are extensively worked in graphite and signed by the artist.
