Item #2705

A small collection of Anne Waldman items, including original artworks, flyers, ephemera, and printed material. Includes 3 collages with ALS and manuscript, 8 prints, 14 broadsides and flyers, and 1 book as follows.

Collages

Three collages, titled from text in the collage.

“Lewis Called,” 8 ½ x 11 in., includes drawing and is made with fragments from the first issue of Angel Hair, a Greyhound bus ticket charting a trip from NYC to Bennington, VT (May 5, 1966), a phone message from Lewis to Anne, brief typed poem phrases, and a portion of a stamped envelope postmarked Brooklyn Apr. 13, 1966. One piece is loose.

“To Be Missed,” 8 1/8 x 11 ½ in. With themes of separation, togetherness, and time. The collage is contained in a kraft brown clasp envelope together with an ALS to Lewis Warsh “Dear Lewis – Another ‘original’ Hold out for $5,000! Just think of how much painters make!! Love A.” On the outside of the brown envelope, AW has handwritten a 75-word poem draft reflecting on times with Lewis in San Francisco and Mexico on acid and in NYC, followed by a chant-like series of repeating, intensifying statements, of setting an intention, “now it’s time & now it’s really time & now I’m going to do it.”

An untitled collage, 12 x 14 ½ in., is constructed of black and white clipped images reminiscent of nineteenth-century woodland fairy scenes, arranged and bordered with fragments of Japanese paper and gold paint. Two of the collage pieces are lost and one is loose.

This work was likely made ca. 1965–1966 as Anne was completing her B.A. at Bennington College in Vermont. Black string-tie artist portfolio, 14 x 18 in., containing:
