In 1959, Ceravolo enrolled in Kenneth Koch's poetry workshop at The New School for Social Research, after completing a degree in civil engineering and returning from Army service abroad. Three years after this first publication, he was published by Columbia University Press and awarded the first Frank O'Hara Award for poetry.
