Rejected from Mars.
Granary Books, 1995. Item #GB_35
10 x 14 in., 55 pp., painted paper over boards in slipcase.
“I made Rejected from Mars by combining images and words that tie together ongoing experiences. Working as an expressive arts therapist, I was hearing incredible stories from adult schizophrenics. I wrote a fictional reconstruction of fragments of different conversations. The drawings were in part illustrations of the process of the words that also became images. I committed myself to make a book in linocut, and hand-colored 58 pages 30 times. The process was very similar to book production in the middle ages. Looking back, I would say that the contents are filled with the ongoing marginality of life, contained in book form.”
–Ric Haynes
Murky, raw, cartoony, fierce, intense, swampy, dark, labyrinthine: this extraordinary, albeit rather frightening work is a sort of travelogue through a tortured but visionary psyche which ultimately resolves into a hard-earned emotional stasis, though one manifestly maintained a day at a time.
Printed by Philip Gallo at The Hermetic Press, then handpainted by Haynes. Bound in painted paper and cloth over boards and housed in a slipcase by Jill Jevne. This is no. 29 from an edition of 30 copies, of which 10 are hors commerce and 20 are for sale; each signed by the artist. Out-of-print. As new.
