Vulva’s Morphia.

Granary Books, 1998. Item #GB_54

8 1/2 x 11 in., 44 pp., cloth over boards, plexiglass slipcase.

“All the plates refer…to female genitalia, with sources ranging from paleolithic carvings to the artist’s own childhood drawings. Schneemann has presented this material in installations and also in slide lectures, which make it seem an academic performance—but also deliciously subversive.”
–Nancy Princenthal, BookForum

“Vulva reads biology and discovers she is an amalgam of proteins and oxytocin hormones which govern all her desires. Vulva decodes feminist constructivist semiotics and realizes she has no authentic feelings at all.”
–Carolee Schneemann, from Vulva’s Morphia

Vulva’s Morphia is an extension of Carolee Schneemann’s installation of the same name. Panels from the installation were reproduced and mounted on Hahnemuehle gray premium velour paper. The text was derived from scans of the original type by Schneemann. Vulva looks over the shoulder of the artist/scholar and gives a running commentary on the state of affairs at the end of the millennium.

The book consists of 36 images made on the Canon color laser printer; the text was printed letterpress by Philip Gallo at The Hermetic Press. Bound in red velvet by Jill Jevne, and housed in plexiglass slipcase. This is from an edition of 35 copies, of which 25 are for sale. Out-of-print. Fine.
