Sand Rock Tide. dsh, Dom Sylvester Houédard. Openings Press. 1964.

Sand Rock Tide.

Openings Press, 1964. Item #1500

41 x 36 in. Linocut printed on craft paper by Simon Verity. “Openings Wallpoem 1.” Described in a contemporary Openings Press price sheet (the press co-founded by dsh and John Furnival): “sandrocktide by dom Sylvester Houédard handcut in Lino and handprinted by Simon Verity – limited edition of 50. price 1 gn., $5, DM 18.–, 20 NF.” Printed on at least two types of paper stock with at least two trim sizes. Richard Saltoun Gallery, representative of dsh's work, notes 5 copies extant. This would make 6. The scarcity of this work may be explained by the fact that Openings Press would typically announce a specific edition size, produce a portion of that number at the outset, with the intention to come back and complete the run at a later date. This practice could easily result in a considerable difference between announced and completed edition sizes. Sand Rock Tide is an important and beautiful work by British poet, artist, scholar, and Benedictine monk, Dom Sylevester Houédard (1924-92). He is widely regarded as one of the foremost practitioners and theorists of concrete poetry and his work is the focus of two recent book publications from Occasional Papers and Richard Saltoun Gallery. Signed and inscribed “much luv” in pencil by the poet, this is from the library of Anselm Hollo. Folded several times, very good condition, details available upon request.
