Item #2019

Joanne Kyger (1934–2017) and Wallace Berman (1926–1976) each moved to San Francisco in 1957. Kyger came from Santa Barbara where she had been a student at University of California, Santa Barbara, while Berman arrived from Los Angeles in the aftermath of his first solo exhibition at Ferus Gallery (June 1957), which was legally forced to close on charges of obscenity.

Kyger left San Francisco for Japan in 1960 where she studied Zen, married Gary Snyder, wrote, and traveled to India with Snyder, Allen Ginsberg, and Peter Orlovsky, before returning to the Bay Area in 1964. Berman moved back to Los Angeles in 1961.

This correspondence documents those in-between years in San Francisco and Larkspur, with tender notes from Berman to Kyger during her stay at Stanford University Hospital, exhibition cards, and autograph notes. Items are described with dates, addresses, and inscriptions.

The collection contains six cards,  one which also includes an envelope.
