In Shelter.

TKS, 2020. Item #2412

In Shelter is a series of sixteen artworks (originally in ink, paper, and wood) that explore the idea of "shelter" as a domestic and political space during the summer of 2020.

Over the course of these illustrations, featuring a sequence of houses and the dialogues of characters within, we see cooking attempts, a mother sneaking a cigarette, police violence, the intrusion of television, and whispering imaginative creatures. Using an informal comic-like aesthetic, the scenes within the book portray the spectrum of humor and dread through their examination of the everyday.

Pheto's influences include non-fine and outsider arts and crafts, Afro-pessimism and related critical frameworks, and his own multiracial Black identity. This is the artist's first book project.

The book is bound in St. Armand Canal paper wrappers, with a translucent purple flyleaf, matching spine, and four-hole pamphlet stitch. This is from an edition of 66 copies, signed and numbered by the artist. Within this edition, a limited number of books with an original illustration are available here.
