Dave's Fabulous Recipes: A Cookbook with Robin Blaser.

TKS Books, 2021. Item #3003

8 1/2 x 5 1/2 in. book, bound in binder rings with Strathmore paper covers. Linocut by M.C. Kinniburgh.

David Farwell was a New Brunswicker who moved to the West Coast ca. 1970s where he would become a social worker at St. Paul’s Hospital. Robin Blaser was a poet with roots in the Berkeley Renaissance of the 1940s and 1950s, where he formed seminal relationships with the poets Jack Spicer and Robert Duncan before immigrating to Canada in 1966. Farwell and Blaser met around 1976 and began a life together on Trafalgar Street in Vancouver’s Kitsilano neighbourhood where they would remain until Robin’s death in 2009 and David’s in 2020. The two of them lived full active lives on many fronts—domestic, literary, social, academic, and artistic. They were also fabulous cooks and hosts. A dinner invitation was absolutely not to be missed. This cookbook is a selection of recipes from a large, blue, three-ringed binder that David kept, with a hand-written, taped-on label on the spine that says “Dave’s Fabulous Recipes.” Some of the recipes have been clipped from magazines; others are written out in David’s neat, round script. Nearly all of them include cooking notes as well as marginalia on the occasion of the meal. “Dave’s Fabulous Recipes” offers an intimate glimpse of life at Trafalgar Street: meals made, friends hosted, chores done, poems written, and trips prepared for.

Dave's Fabulous Recipes includes a preface by Miriam Nichols, over sixty pages of recipes, photographs, and an identifying list of names and readings mentioned in the marginalia. Designed and printed by M.C. Kinniburgh, this is from an edition of 77 copies, numbered by the bookmaker. Description adapted from the preface, by Miriam Nichols.
