This is the fourth chapbook in a series titled "Messy Archivist," which reflects on the practice of assembling archives at Granary Books.
Subtitled "The Surface is the Relief," this chapbook was drafted on the occasion of invited talks at the University at Buffalo Poetry Collection and Syracuse University Special Collections. The chapbook contemplates the nature of archival surfaces, and explores how our attentiveness to the relationship between surface and depth might our understanding of archives, especially at scale. Drawing on observation of water patterns and the process of learning how to surf, this volume of Messy Archivist takes us to the water's edge to contemplate our oceans of documents.
