Ice, no. 1.
N.d. Item #3884
Side-stapled mimeo. A "one-shot" magazine edited by Clark, dated "no copyright no nothin." Cover photograph is irreverently described as depicting Ted Berrigan and Ron Padgett, courtesy of Grove Press.
Though styled as a "one-shot," Ice, along with Nice, was part of a series of magazines published by Clark during his time as editor at the Paris Review. As Clark recalls in Jacket2:
"The magazines had deliberately uncataloguable titles: Once, Twice, Thrice, Thrice and 1/2, Frice, Vice, Spice, Slice, Ice, Nice, Dice, and Lice. I filled up the mimeo series with the spillover of poems I was receiving for the Paris Review—which could handle only a fraction of the good new work that was coming in to me—as well as with some ‘assignments’ from friends far and near..."
Contributors include Ted Berrigan, E.A. McGregor-Plarr, Allen Ginsberg, Joanne Kyger, Bernadette Mayer, Harlan Dangerfield, Joe Pinelli, Robert Howell, Tom Clark, Fielding Dawson, Diane di Prima, David Shapiro, Richard Kolmar, "Doreen, aged 13 years," Jack Kerouac, Aram Saroyan, Edward Kissam, Peter Schjeldahl, and Ron Padgett. Minor corrections to Kerouac's text (from "Visions of Cody") have been made in blue pen. Final page contains unattributed play "In the Foundry."
Very good with toning and staining to covers and minor fold present on back cover.
