Messy Archivist is an experimental series written by M.C. Kinniburgh, documenting the archival work at Granary Books through poetry, prose, and image. Begun in 2020 and published annually as handmade chapbooks, Messy Archivist traces the etymology of archival practice, the ecosystems of archival creation and preservation, and the embodied aspects of work in these realms.
This volume collects Messy Archivist, nos. 1–4 (2020–2023), with the addition of Messy Archivist no. 5 (2024), with introductory essay and chapbook bibliography.
Messy Archivist has been featured by the Beinecke Library, the University at Buffalo's Poetry Collection, and Syracuse University and the Central New York Humanities Corridor. The original chapbooks are held by special collections and art libraries throughout North America.
Subseries is a new imprint under the aegis of Granary Books. Named for a unit of organization in archival practice, Subseries focuses specifically on works that emerge from archives represented by Granary or related archival collaborations.
