The New Incas.

The New Pyramid Press, 1983. Item #4006

Green embossed leather over boards with gray suede pastedowns, teal head and tail bands, and gold-stamped spine, in black cloth slipcase. Elephant volume, 18.75 x 19 in.

Handsomely bound, published, and printed by Rob Hadrill at The New Pyramid Press in London, England. The leather cover design echoes a photograph, "Six Windows," featured in the book. The type is in Perpetua and Plantin, printed letterpress on Velin Arches deckle-edge paper. The book features an introduction by John Hemming, and 42 tipped-on screen-printed duotones of Paul Yule's photographs. The duotones were printed by John Cole Graphics using positives made especially for the book by Paul Yule.

Yule's photojournalistic career began with this project, when he visited Peru as a photographer in 1979 and began documenting contemporary and traditional life in and around Cusco, Peru. The book shows scenes from the market, city, and country life, as well as local inhabitants and dramatic landscapes.

This is from a limited edition of 40 copies; this is the display copy, signed by Paul Yule. Some small scuffs and minor rubbing to the black slipcase. The adhesives used to mount the duotones (a quarter-inch square in each corner of the photo) have yellowed and no longer function (the duotones are thus laid in). Else, all elements fine; a lovely and significant production.

Price: $7,500.00
