Firebird.

Granary Books & Chax Press, 1987. Item #4127

7 x 11 1/4  in., quarter-bound cloth over boards with handmade paper. 40 pp.

“Like a medieval chronicler with the eye of a poet and the heart of the taleteller, [Metcalf] fits together radiant fragments into a wholly new kind of construct.”
–Guy Davenport

Firebird tells two stories, interweaving them in Metcalf’s inimitable and highly charged documentary poem method. One story is that of the Peshtigo fire of 1871 which swallowed the town of Peshtigo, Wisconsin. The other is of great hawk migrations. The original poem is by Paul Metcalf; maps and other embellishments in color by Cynthia Miller.

Co-published by Chax Press; designed and printed letterpress by Charles Alexander on Arches paper, with marble cover papers by Mary Beaton. This is from an edition of 36 copies bound by Priscilla Spitler, of which 26 are lettered A to Z and ten are numbered I–X. This is letter J from the lettered edition. There is also an edition of 200 copies, numbered and signed, in paper wrappers.

Out-of-print. Fine.
