So Going Around Cities: New & Selected Poems 1958–1979.
Blue Wind Press, 1980. Item #4214 This is from the first trade paperback edition. There was also an edition in cloth over boards and a signed edition, in cloth over boards in a box, signed and numbered by the poet.
Perfect bound in wrappers. Cover by Donna Dennis, with drawings by George Schneeman, and a photograph of Berrigan by Alain.
Berrigan's selected poems, which, as the back cover notes, he describes as "as much as was possible of The Story So Far." This copy is from the library of the poet Dick Gallup, a close friend of Berrigan's who appears in the final paragraph of the acknowledgements page: "I have always liked the idea of a dedication page, and one follows. At the same time, it feels appropriate here to record that this book is especially For: Joe Brainard; Dick Gallup; & Ron Padgett." It is inscribed warmly to Gallup on the title page: "First presentation copy (after Alice's) for Dick, with Love, Ted (Here we are in another damned city!) Boulder, Colorado, April 18th 1980" along with a heart, in which Berrigan has written "Poem for you on page 367." The poem in question is "To Himself," by [Giacomo] Leopardi, translated by Berrigan, Gordon Brotherston, and George Schneeman. Gallup has left two bookmarks in the book: Joel Lewis' business card on p. 163, marking the poem "Dick Gallup (Birthday)"; and a blank receipt card for City Wide Taxi, operating out of San Francisco, likely from Gallup's time as a taxi driver in the city.
Very good minus, with covers showing shelf wear, toning, and stains. The spine shows creasing from reading, but the interior is clean. A touching and clearly valued association copy.
