With an introduction and commentaries by Stephen Bann, who frames Finlay and Costley's work within by writing "Finlay is not solely concerned with the layering of symbolic and emblematic themes. The whole collection is animated and unified by the notion of modern heroism, made concrete by allusions to land, air and sea warfare in the present century...Perhaps Ian Hamilton Finlay's emblems, as indeed much of his recent work, can be seen as a strategy for belatedness." This is from an edition of 750 copies, of which 26 are lettered and signed by the poet. This is letter H and is signed by Finlay.
Very good, with a shallow crease to the upper right of the covers and text block and a thin toning band across the top of the front cover.
