Granary Books, 1991. Item #GB_14

6 1/2 x 13 1/2 in., 44 pp., paper over boards, clamshell box.

Nods brings together the diverse visions of preeminent American avant-garde composer John Cage, German artist and writer, Barbara Fahrner, and American poet and typographer Philip Gallo. Fahrner performed a selection from, and chance operations on, several of Cage’s texts—ranging from everyday allegories of indeterminacy to philosophical writings on musical composition and dance—in order to produce what became the text of Nods. Visually innovative typography and letterpress printing are by Philip Gallo at The Hermetic Press. The writing and typography are complemented by Fahrner’s printed linocuts and extensive handwork of drawn and painted images in ink and gouache.

Bound concertina style with paper over boards by Daniel E. Kelm at the Wide Awake Garage. Housed in a cloth-covered clamshell box by Jill Jevne. This is from an edition of 45 copies, of which 10 are hors commerce and 35 are for sale; each numbered and signed by Cage, Fahrner, Gallo and Kelm. Out-of-print.
