Roar Shocks.

Granary Books, 1998. Item #GB_57

8 1/2 x 10 1/2 in., 26 pp., cloth over boards.

Roar Shocks contains texts from treatises on the Rorschach procedure, which were subsequently modified by David Rathman through multiple photocopying. Rathman’s evocative page compositions combine these ambiguous texts, charts, and snippets of dialogue with stark black and white ink drawings. The papers went through numerous transformations, with several layers of treatments, before being printed with a based-down black ink resembling copy machine toner. The result is a schizophrenia of page turning, at once playful and serious, ironic and straight, frightening and soothing—the images and texts of Roar Shocks invite multiple readings and interpretations.

Printed letterpress from metal engravings on 180 gm Rives BFK (bound) or 250 gm Rives BFK White (flats) by Philip Gallo at The Hermetic Press. This is from an edition of 33 copies bound in cloth over boards by Jill Jevne, of which 13 are hors commerce. There are also 10 sets of boxed prints. All copies signed by Rathman. Out-of-print.
