Ed Foster and Talisman Archive

The Ed Foster & Talisman Archive includes the personal archive of poet and writer Edward Halsey Foster (Ed Foster); the archive of his poetry magazine, Talisman: A Journal of Contemporary Poetry and Poetics; and his press, Talisman House, Publishers.

An alumnus of Columbia University and a longtime resident of Massachusetts, Foster was a champion of the postwar avant-garde movement broadly known as “New American Poetry” as well as the specific voice of an American (and especially New England / Northeast) poetics. He studied extensively in Turkey, facilitating cross-cultural exchange between international and American poets from the 1970s onward; advocated for the representation of gay and queer poets in the canon; and published some of the most influential experimental voices in poetry including William Bronk, Jack Spicer, Alice Notley, Ted Berrigan, Susan Howe, and countless others.
