The Back of Time.

Granary Books, 1992. Item #GB_21

9 x 15 in., 30 pp., paper over boards, with cover and clamshell box.

“Scobey’s work is positively suffused with light, a glow which suggests the primal cosmic spaces of the ether, the plasma, or the wide-open intergalactic planes of time.”
–Johanna Drucker

Scobey’s organic, primordial shapes and colorful light against darkness suggest a whimsical yet contemplative universe. Laser split pages and alternate openings to the book cause the reader to enter a journey through the cosmos and time. Bound at the spine and the fore edge, this book opens from a laser-cut crack in the middle of the pages and reveals a progressive series of glimpses into a possible parallel universe, rich with color, magic, and movement.

Relief etchings, intaglio, watercolor, pen and ink drawing and collage by Scobey on Rives BFK and Moriki papers. The etchings were editioned by Pati Scobey and Katherine Kuehn at Ricochet Works. Bound in wire-edge structure by Daniel E. Kelm at the Wide Awake Garage. Boxes by Jill Jevne. This is from an edition of 25 copies, of which 10 are hors commerce (plus 2 artist’s proofs) and 15 are for sale; each signed by the artist. Out-of-print.
