The Archive offers a distinct opportunity for rich scholarly exploration into concrete, sound, and language poetry through published and unpublished manuscripts, correspondence, drawings, journals, sketchbooks, audio/video recordings and ephemera.

“Though he would be among the first people to point out the inherent problems with the terminology, poet and scholar Steve McCaffery is one of the major architects of postmodern Canadian literature and was a major player in the Canadian avant-garde of the 1970s. With fellow poet bpNichol, he formed the Toronto Research Group in 1973 ... With Nichol, Paul Dutton and Rafael Barreto-Rivera, McCaffery also formed the highly influential sound poetry collective, The Four Horsemen.

McCaffery’s writing, both creative and critical, is concerned to some extent with going beyond the sentence and the word, beyond syntax.”

Ian Hamilton Finlay and the Wild Hawthorn Press

Ian Hamilton Finlay and the Wild Hawthorn Press

The collection includes approximately 340 items, which, taken together, provides a far-reaching overview of the publications of Ian Hamilton Finlay and the Wild Hawthorn Press. There are key examples of all styles, phases, and periods of Finlay’s printed work and as such, the collection offers a singular opportunity for research and exhibition with reference to a range of concerns, including artists’ books, concrete poetry, design, collaboration, gardens, little magazines, and small presses. There are many rarities among more than 100 books and booklets, 150 cards and folding cards, 15 poems/prints, 25 exhibition catalogs and related books, a complete run of Poor. Old. Tired. Horse., and a unique fabric sculpture, a prototype for an abandoned edition from the early eighties. Additionally of note, there are seventeen signed limited editions and twenty-two items inscribed and/or addressed and mailed to Finlay’s longtime friend, the New York-based, British-born painter, Trevor Winkfield, several with substantial notes.

Ron Padgett, Selected Publications

Poet, writer, translator, and editor Ron Padgett (b. 1942) has published extensively in unique printed forms: mimeographed magazines and pamphlets with covers by Joe Brainard, George Schneeman, and Andy Warhol; C Press projects such as William Burroughs’ Time; and small-edition collaborations with artists and publishers such as Bertrand Dorny and Gervais Jassaud. This collection of Ron Padgett publications presents the above assortment as well as other volumes, including his first self-published work in 1960 (Summer Balloons) and an array of books he edited for Full Court Press from 1974–1989. Nearly all of the following items are from Padgett’s personal collection and most bear his signature, including a number of exceedingly rare volumes.

The 0 to 9 Collection

The 0 to 9 Collection

Edited by Vito Acconci and Bernadette Mayer, 0 to 9 is widely considered one of the most experimental and influential publications of the mimeograph and small press movement in America. Published in six issues from 1967 to 1969 in New York City, 0 to 9 also published a supplement titled Street Works and several books by Aram Saroyan, Bernadette Mayer, Vito Acconci, and Rosemary Mayer, along with three booklets that constituted Adrian Piper’s first solo exhibition. 0 to 9 was especially engaged in the particulars of the page and inscriptions upon it, emphasizing aspects of performance, minimalism, multi-disciplinarity, and concrete approaches to language. Given small print runs of 100 to 350 copies per issue, the original publications of 0 to 9 are exceedingly rare.

Petra Vogt Archive with Bardo Matrix Press & Ira Cohen in Kathmandu, Nepal

Living in Kathmandu from approx. 1972 to 1978, Petra Vogt pursued her art and poetry alongside partner Ira Cohen, as well as Nepali hippies including Jimmy Thapa and Trilochan Shrestha, and the Kathmandu expatriate community including Angus and Hettie MacLise, Dana Young, John Chick, Charles Henri Ford, and others. While Vogt illustrated works for Starstreams and Bardo Matrix, and published her poetry in magazines like Angus MacLise’s Ting Pa, her creative output in this era far exceeds her publications. This is the first archive with significant materials that illuminate her own life and work, as well as provide important insights into the Kathmandu scene—including Bardo Matrix Press and the Spirit Catcher Bookshop. The collection features approx. 34 journals, 150 artworks, 864 photographs by Ira Cohen, and over 60 items of correspondence, offering us substantial perspective on her creative practices and participation within the community.

"A Secret Location" Archive

The Archive from "A Secret Location" was collected by a reclusive New Jersey inventor and offers a rare glimpse into the diversity of poetic doings and material production that is the Small Press Revolution. It provides a rich gathering for framing an understanding of the various drifts, swirls, and eruptions in the poetry and art firmament of the era, including: Beat Generation, Counterculture, New York School, Venice West, San Francisco Renaissance, Wichita Vortex, Black Mountain, Mavericks, Hippies, Diggers, and related iterations that inform, incite, and inspire one another and the culture at large in ways we are only now beginning to fully grasp.

Kathy Acker Collection

Kathy Acker Collection

The jacket copy for Chris Krauss’s After Kathy Acker describes her best:

“Rich girl, street punk, lost girl and icon ... scholar, stripper, victim and media-whore: The late Kathy Acker’s legend and writings are wrapped in mythologies, created mostly by Acker herself.”

The collection comprises many rarities, including complete sets of her three serial novels (one with letters to Black Sparrow publisher John Martin); her very scarce first book, Politics, self-published in San Diego in 1972; an original manuscript for a never-published story, Bondage & Discipline in New York City (1976); a first edition of Great Expectations (Re/Search, 1982), as well as copies of nearly all of her published books, together with assorted ephemera.

Jen Bervin Early Collection

Jen Bervin Early Collection

Poet and visual artist Jen Bervin's work brings together text and textile in a practice that encompasses artist books, poetry, large-scale art works, and archival research. Bervin's work has been shown at The Walker Art Center and is in many special collections including the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University, Stanford University, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, and the British Library. She has received fellowships in art and writing from The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, The New York Foundation for the Arts, Centrum, The MacDowell Colony, Visual Studies Workshop, and The Camargo Foundation and will be a Von Hess Visiting Artist at the Borowsky Center Publication Arts at the University of the Arts in 2012. 

The Jen Bervin Early Collection comprises all of the edition work made by the artist between 1997-2004. Five complete sets have been assembled from the remaining inventory. There is one copy for sale.
